Mexico has had a reputation for being unsafe in some parts, especially in the north of the country. Almost everywhere in the world has unsafe places. But if you stay in the safe places in Oaxaca, I’m sure nothing will happen to you.

Oaxaca is one of the safest states in Mexico, and I’ve proven it myself. I have lived here all my life and nothing has happened to me. The only tips I will give you is that if you come with children, keep an eye on them and don’t go to unsafe or lonely places without a guide.

With anything else to say about the security of the state, let’s continue to the next part.

DINOSAUR MUSEUM

This place is for everyone, not necessarily for the little ones, but maybe they will enjoy it more. It is located in Santa María Atzompa, (I leave the location below), and has representations of Cretaceous animals. They do activities and workshops on these topics and your children will surely have a lot of fun.

BS LIBRARY

Several schools in Oaxaca make visits to this place throughout the year because it is a very beautiful place with a good purpose: to help children read in their daily lives, get closer to the arts and take care of the environment.

They are trying to fulfill this purpose by organizing workshops, concerts, exhibitions and other activities that allow the little ones to get closer to the arts, reading and caring for the environment.

The BS has good books and rooms as well as a reading-friendly environment, which you and your children will definitely love. The BS is a very good place for families with young children and you can get there by cab or walking, also public transportation will drop you off nearby. I leave you the location below.

OAXACA CHILDREN’S MUSEUM (MIO)

Have your daughter or son venture into an old railroad station, which is now the Children’s Museum of Oaxaca.

On November 12, 1892 the first train arrived in Oaxaca and the service ended in 2004. The Ministry of Culture, PAICE, and the Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca Foundation began to restore the small station and the wagons.

Now these cars and trains can be enjoyed by your children, as they have been transformed into libraries and interactive rooms. The station houses the history of the place, a library and places where some workshops are held for children, such as food preparation or art knowledge. In addition, the open spaces were equipped with games where children will have fun.

Another option is that you can go by cab but it will be quite expensive. And your other option is to go with us on a private tour. MITLA’S MAGIC VILLAGE

Are you ready to venture into a magical town with delicious gastronomy, colorful streets, incredible views and an exceptionally decorated archaeological site? This is the Magical Town of Mitla, one of the 6 Magical Towns of Oaxaca, where you can enjoy a lot with your family.

Regardless of the ages of your family members, Mitla will be an incredible experience for everyone. In my visits to Mitla I have always discovered something new. This Pueblo Magico changes throughout the year.

During the Day of the Dead season, Mitla dresses in colors and decorations allusive to this festivity. In addition to this, there are fairs or activities where you can taste the typical gastronomy of the season, the bread of the dead being the most representative in this case.

During the Christmas season, Mitla is filled with Christmas lights and decorations giving it a truly magical atmosphere. Children can skate on the ice rink, and everyone can take the magic train for a ride through the village. And there are many more activities awaiting you. So if you come this time of year, don’t forget to visit Mitla.

BASEBALL AND SOCCER GAMES

Oaxaca has everything, one thing it does not lack is sports. It has 2 professional stadiums, one for soccer and one for baseball. The soccer stadium belongs to the Alebrijes team (the local professional soccer team). And the Eduardo Vasconcelos Stadium belongs to the Guerreros de Oaxaca (Warriors of Oaxaca) baseball team.

To find out if you can attend any of these teams’ games you will have to check the schedules. I hope you can enjoy a game of these great teams.

ETHNOBOTANICAL GARDEN

The former orchard of the Dominican monks is now the Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca. A place that houses the diversity of plants found throughout the state of Oaxaca. It is a place that offers you a unique opportunity to teach your children or loved ones to conserve this diversity.

The Ethnobotanical Garden is a very good activity for families. You may wonder why, well, it is a very nice place to be, where you can meet various plants and if you are lucky, some animals. The place used to be an orchard, so you will find water mirrors, wells and canals, which are great to take pictures and take a good souvenir of Oaxaca.

Especially if you live in Oaxaca you can keep up with the news from this place because there are times when there are workshops for children in the Ethnobotanical Garden.

VISIT A TOWN THAT MAKES ALEBRIJES (SAN MARTÍN TILCAJETE OR ATZOMPA)

Alebrijes are dreams that have become reality, (learn more about their history by clicking here). These mystical creatures full of color and strange shapes are part of the imagination of the artisan who makes them. His process begins with the flexible wood of the copal that allows him to carve these figures. It continues with the process of painting them. There are large pieces that take a long time to make because of their details or their size.

By visiting a town where alebrijes are made, such as San Martín Tilcajete on the handicrafts route or Atzompa on a route involving Monte Albán, you can learn about the process of making these crafts. If you visit a workshop where these crafts are made, you could paint your own masterpiece. A dream come out of your imagination, captured in an alebrije. An activity that any member of the family would undoubtedly enjoy, and I tell you from my own experience, I have painted some alebrijes and it is an unparalleled experience.

It is definitely one of the best activities for families with kids in Oaxaca that you should try.
