WHO WAS BENITO JUÁREZ?

WHERE AND WHEN DID BENITO JUÁREZ WAS BORN?

Benito Pablo Juárez García was born the 21st of March of 1806 in San Pablo Guelatao a community of the Northern Mountains(Sierra Norte) of Oaxaca, now the community is called Guelatao de Juárez in honor to the ex-president of México. Ixtlán de Juárez also has his last name because he was baptized there.

Benito Juárez was zapotec and farmer in his town, after the death of his fathers, he stayed with his uncle, he taught him to speak spanish, but he couldn´t advance a lot. His wish to learn made him migrate to the city where he worked and learn at the same time, he worked in the house of Antonio Maza, father of his future wife Margarita Maza.

In Oaxaca he lived in the actual house in García Vigil number 609, in this place you can find a small museum with personal objects of Benito Juárez, historic objects of the Independence and the War of Reforma and also of the French Interventions, you can go inside this museum for 3.20 dollars (65 pesos).

WHAT DID BENITO JUÁREZ STUDIED?

Juárez started to study with a franciscan priest, after that he went to the seminary, but he didn´t finish his education there; he went out of the seminary to study Jurisprudence in the Science and Art Institute of Oaxaca.

When he got his title he dedicated to defend indigenous communities, sadly this took him to prison.

WHAT POLITICAL CHARGES DID HE OCCUPY?

Juárez occupied diverse charges like judge, deputy, etc…

But the most relevant ones where 2, the first one was Governor of Oaxaca, while he was in the charge, the United States invaded Mexico, and Santa Anna escaped to Oaxaca, Benito Juárez didn´t let him enter and when Santa Anna returned to charge, he was exiliated.

The other charge was being President of Mexico, he was liberal and he promulgated the Reforma Laws, this provoked the Reforma War that Benito Juárez won and he re-established the Republic.

Benito Juárez said this phrase when he restored the republic in 1867.

WHEN DID HE DIE?

The 18th of july of 1872 the President died, after having pain in the chest and malaise, he died due to a heart attack.
