WHAT ARE THE POSADAS AND HOW DID THEY ARISE?

Hello to everyone, welcome to Travel in Oaxaca, today I am going to tell you about a mexican tradition of these dates: the posadas.

The posadas are in the period of preparation for Christmas, they start the 16th of December and finish the 24th.

WHAT ARE THE POSADAS?

The posadas are celebrations that represent Mary and Joseph in their pilgrimage to Belén.

They are held with carolers, costumes, piñatas and food, including some with real donkeys.

HOW DID THEY ARISE?

Before the arrival of the Spanish people, the indigenous had their own celebrations to their gods, one of them was the arrival of Huitzilopochtli, god of war for the aztecs, the celebration was made in the month of panquetzaliztli that equals december.

In this festivity, aztecs waited the winter solstice and a lot of celebrations were made in their houses.

When the Spanish came, they started to evangelize, and the evangelizers changed this celebration with the preparation for Christmas: the posadas and Advent.

At the beginning the celebration was called ¨Misas de Aguinaldo¨, in which when the mass finished, something called aguinaldo was given to the present people, know when the posada is finished the organizers give candy, ponche and/or give a piñata to brake.

With the pass of time the celebration went changing and more elements were added, different elements in every state and region.
